The best time to visit Europe for most travelers is spring (April–June) or early fall (September–October): warm days, fewer crowds than July and August, and noticeably lower prices. But "Europe" is a big place, so here's how the seasons really play out — and the best months for 12 of our favorite destinations.
The seasons, in plain English
Spring (April–June): the sweet spot
Gardens bloom, days get long, and the big sights are busy but manageable. Southern Europe is warm without the summer heat; the north is mild. Easter week is the exception — expect crowds and higher prices in Italy, Spain and Portugal around Holy Week.
Summer (July–August): beaches and big crowds
This is peak season: the longest days, the highest prices and the biggest queues. Cities in southern Europe can be very hot, so sightseeing works best early and late. It's also when many locals take holiday — in August some smaller restaurants and shops in France and Italy close for a few weeks, even as the coast fills up. Summer is the right call if you're heading to the beach or the mountains, and for lavender in Provence (July).
Early fall (September–October): our favorite
The sea is still warm, harvest season brings wine and food festivals, and crowds thin out after the first week of September. For a first trip, this is the easiest window to get right.
Winter (November–March): quiet and cheaper
Fewer tourists and better hotel rates, shorter days and more rain. It's a good fit for museum-heavy city breaks and for Christmas markets in late November and December. Some seaside towns, like parts of the Amalfi Coast and Algarve, scale back services outside the warm months.

How to choose your month
- Want the best weather and fewer crowds? Aim for May–June or September.
- Travelling on a budget? Go in the shoulder seasons (April–May, late September–October) and avoid school-holiday weeks.
- Chasing beaches? June through September — the Algarve and the Amalfi Coast are at their best between May–June and September–October, avoiding peak August.
- Love food and culture? Early fall pairs harvest season with comfortable city walking.
- Hate heat? Skip July–August in Italy, Spain and southern France.
Plan around the seasons
Shoulder seasons mean variable weather, so pack layers and a light rain jacket.
Packable rain jacket
Spring and fall showers pass quickly — a jacket that stuffs into your bag is worth the space.
Packing cubes
Layers take space. Cubes keep a carry-on organized across changing weather.
